Zhuzhou, Hunan Province and found a patch of low-growing berries,
<a href="https://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Melastoma+dodecandrum">Melastoma
dodecandrum</a>
(地棯). It's edible, sweet with an astringent and slightly bitter
aftertaste. The <a href="https://tcmwiki.com/wiki/twelvestamen-melastoma-herb">whole plant is used in traditional Chinese
medicine</a>.
According to a <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15139128/">2003 article published in China Journal of Chinese
Materia Medica</a>, <q cite="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15139128/">Five compounds were
isolated and identified as hexacosanoic acid (I), quercetin(II),
avicularin(III), gallic acid (IV), kaempferol(V).</q></p>

素（Ⅱ）、扁蓄苷（Ⅲ）、没食子酸（Ⅳ）和山柰酚（Ⅴ）。</q></p>

<p>The Latin name literally means "black mouth", since the fruit stains
your mouth. Perhaps it could also be used as a dye.</p>
